On Tuesday May 28, 2024, the Grade 10 class visited Dutchman's Gold to learn about beekeeping practices, honey extraction and production. It was a lovely visit, they learned lots and left inspired to start their own beekeeping club in the fall. If there is anyone in the community with some beekeeping experience willing to mentor them, the students are looking for a facilitator to help ensure they are doing things correctly at the beginning.
Arya Jain, shared the following reflection about his experience:
"The trip to the bee farm was a good experience that tied our knowledge of beekeeping together. It was enlightening to learn about how honey is made and how beekeepers treat the bees. It was also fun to learn about the bees themselves. I did not know that they communicated by emitting a chemical and how smoke can mask the chemical so they can't signal for danger. It was also good to learn about the threats to bees. Lastly, I thoroughly enjoyed "facing my fears" and holding a bee for the first time because that is not something I would have ever imagined doing."
